Everyone else should be president

June 22, 2010

Every news outlet seems to think it can sell more copy or get more eyeballs if they act like a Dear Abby for the White House. Google “Obama should” and go to news and you have the choice of 1,070 articles containing that brief phrase. Obama should lay off of BP, Obama should punch the CEO of BP in the nose, Obama should stop playing golf, Obama should keep playing golf, Obama should have given this speech, Obama should stop telling Israel what to do, Obama should, Obama should, etc. (more…)

On Saturday Night Live

April 12, 2010

When Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination over Hillary Clinton, I was unsure as to how SNL would be able to survive the three years between him eventually winning the presidency and the next election cycle. SNL had been running on fumes since the mid-90s gaining the necessary fuel to survive only in the September thru November stretch before the presidential elections. Occasionally they could bust out some worthwhile sketch involving the all-too-easy caricatures of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. But No Drama Obama didn’t hold the same promise as Slick Willie and Dubya. Fred Armisen doesn’t really do a very good job with Obama in my opinion. Plus, the comedy, from the sketches I’ve seen, has to rely on Obama as a straight man responding to the general craziness of Washington. Biden has more promise, but I think Biden is funnier than any impersonation of him could be. I wondered if this might actually spell the end of the institution. (more…)

Remember when Tom Tancredo suggested a civics literacy test?

February 12, 2010

Well, I think it might be a good idea for “GOP Leaders” as well, since 78% of them believe that Barack Obama is a socialist. What policies that Obama has enacted or tried to enact can be considered socialist, I wonder? It can’t be TARP, since that wasn’t his plan. Perhaps it’s health care reform, a plan that will increase numbers of people on private insurance and contains no public option. That would be ironic also since these same leaders would prefer Mitt Romney (of Romneycare) to be the Republican nominee in 2012 over any other candidate. Is it the stimulus? Well, that is a straight up Keynesian policy and Keynes wasn’t a socialist. Is it that he bailed out banks that employ millionaires but not banks that are run by people in the middle class? Are there policies I’m missing?

Or is it really that GOP leaders don’t actually understand what socialism is? (more…)

One of the weirder things about “Birthers”

February 8, 2010

is their claim that Barack Obama is not an American citizen. Actually, it seems like their main claim at times. But Arnold Schwarzenegger is an American citizen. He can’t be President because he isn’t a natural born citizen. The Birthers seem to confuse the two.

But even here, I wonder if they’ve thought this through (obviously they haven’t, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt). Let’s say that Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii, just for argument’s sake. Don’t they still say that his mom is Stanley Ann Dunham? If that’s the case, then he’s an American citizen.

I know this because my daughter’s an American citizen. She actually has a little in common with Obama. One of her parents is American and her other parent is not. Despite having a foreign parent, she was born an American citizen. Also note this–to test the Birthers’ argument–she was not born in the United States. Her birth certificate shows that she was born in Scotland. And yet she is still an American citizen by birth. (more…)

Chuck Norris should just go back to kicking people

December 18, 2009

*updated*

It’d be a lot more effective and make a lot more sense. Here is a ridiculous paragraph from an article by Walker, Texas Ranger:

Lastly, as we near the eve of another Christmas, I wonder: What would have happened if Mother Mary had been covered by Obamacare? What if that young, poor and uninsured teenage woman had been provided the federal funds (via Obamacare) and facilities (via Planned Parenthood, etc.) to avoid the ridicule, ostracizing, persecution and possible stoning because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancy? Imagine all the great souls who could have been erased from history and the influence of mankind if their parents had been as progressive as Washington’s wise men and women! Will Obamacare morph into Herodcare for the unborn?

It’s probably not productive to address this weird mess, but it does remind me of why I don’t really get the socially conservative problems with universal health care. By legislating against abortion but not providing universal coverage, the right’s goal seems to be to beat the sin out of apostate women. But that seems to me to be a cowardly copout. I, as a man, can make it more difficult for a woman to have an abortion by making abortion illegal. However, by doing this I still don’t make it easier for the woman to have the child.

Why it was good that Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize despite his not deserving it

December 12, 2009

I mean really, what’s the big deal about the Nobel Peace Prize anyway? It comes with a hefty bag of cash but other than that, who cares? I can see how the prizes in Medicine or Physics or Literature can give some recognition in an otherwise recognition-free slog of research or writing, but they are still prizes given by a small group of people as fallen as the next group of people. Two-hundred people were nominated for the peace prize in February and we won’t find out who the other nominees were for several decades, but I will give $500 to anyone who remembers this post when the nominees are announced if George W. Bush was not one of those other nominees. Granted, no one reads this and $500 won’t be very much money then, but I’m pretty sure that someone nominated him anyway. (more…)
